Tamil Astrology Terms Explained for Beginners
Understanding Tamil astrology terms makes it easier to follow a lesson, read an introductory book or ask questions during a horoscope consultation.
You may already recognise words such as Rasi, Lagnam and Nakshatram from family conversations. The difficulty begins when several terms appear together and nobody pauses to explain how they differ.
This guide introduces fifteen commonly used terms with Tamil spellings and straightforward meanings. Pronunciations and English spellings vary, so focus on the concept rather than one transliteration.
These explanations describe terminology within astrological traditions. They do not establish that astrology can reliably predict personal events.

1. ஜாதகம் — Jathagam
Jathagam generally means a horoscope or birth chart prepared using a person’s birth date, time and place.
The chart records positions calculated according to the chosen astrological system. An astrologer then interprets those positions using that system’s rules.
A personal birth chart differs from a general forecast written for everyone sharing the same sign.
If you are arranging a horoscope consultation, ask which birth details are required and explain any uncertainty before booking.
2. ராசி — Rasi
Rasi means a zodiac sign. In everyday Tamil conversations, “What is your Rasi?” usually asks about the sign occupied by the Moon at birth.
However, the word can also refer to a sign more generally. Always consider the sentence in which it appears.
The twelve signs are:
| Tamil name | Common English name |
|---|---|
| மேஷம் | Aries |
| ரிஷபம் | Taurus |
| மிதுனம் | Gemini |
| கடகம் | Cancer |
| சிம்மம் | Leo |
| கன்னி | Virgo |
| துலாம் | Libra |
| விருச்சிகம் | Scorpio |
| தனுசு | Sagittarius |
| மகரம் | Capricorn |
| கும்பம் | Aquarius |
| மீனம் | Pisces |
These name correspondences do not mean that every Western and Indian astrology system calculates sign positions in the same way.
3. லக்னம் — Lagnam
Lagnam, or the ascendant, refers to the zodiac position rising at the eastern horizon for the specified time and place.
It is used as a reference point in many forms of chart interpretation.
Rasi and Lagnam: What Is the Difference?
| Term | What it refers to in a typical personal horoscope discussion |
|---|---|
| Janma Rasi | The Moon’s sign at birth |
| Lagnam | The ascendant calculated for the birth time and place |
A person can have different Rasi and Lagnam signs. Neither label should automatically be substituted for the other.
A useful question is:
“இங்கே ராசி என்று சொல்வது சந்திர ராசியையா?”
When you say Rasi here, do you mean the Moon sign?
4. நட்சத்திரம் — Nakshatram
In the commonly used 27-Nakshatra system, the zodiac is divided into twenty-seven sections.
When someone asks for your birth Nakshatra, they generally mean the section occupied by the Moon at birth.
Although Nakshatram is often translated as “star,” its technical use here refers to a defined zodiac division. It is not simply the nearest visible star.
Rasi and Nakshatra therefore describe the Moon’s position using different divisions.
5. பாதம் — Padam
Each Nakshatra is divided into four Padams, also written as Padas.
For example, “second Padam” identifies the second quarter of the relevant Nakshatra.
In the standard equal-division arrangement, each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes, and each Padam spans 3 degrees 20 minutes.
You do not need to memorise these measurements immediately. First understand the relationship:
One Nakshatra contains four Padams.
6. கிரகம் — Graham
Graham, or Graha, is used for the planetary factors considered in astrology.
Traditional Navagraha terminology includes the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
This differs from the scientific classification of planets. The Sun is a star, the Moon is Earth’s natural satellite, and Rahu and Ketu represent the lunar nodes rather than physical planets.
For the astronomical background to the Moon, explore NASA’s Moon information. That resource explains lunar science, not astrological interpretation.
7. பாவம் — Bhavam
Bhavam means an astrological house. A chart contains twelve houses used to organise areas of interpretation.
Signs and houses are related, but they are not identical concepts.
A statement about “the fourth sign” is not automatically a statement about “the fourth house.” Ask which reference point and house system the teacher is using.
For a beginner, identifying houses correctly is more useful than memorising a long list of predicted results.
8. அதிபதி — Adhipathi
Adhipathi means ruler or lord.
You may hear phrases such as Rasi Adhipathi, meaning the ruler assigned to a sign, or Lagna Adhipathi, meaning the ruler of the ascendant sign.
For example, within commonly used traditional rulerships, Mars is assigned rulership of Aries. If Aries is the ascendant sign, Mars is described as the Lagna lord.
This is a relationship defined within the astrological system. It is not a statement about physical ownership or control.
9. பார்வை — Paarvai
Paarvai, often called Drishti or an aspect, describes a relationship assigned between chart factors according to particular astrological rules.
It does not mean that a planet literally looks at another planet.
Aspect rules vary between systems. When you encounter the term, ask:
- Which body or sign is making the aspect?
- What is being aspected?
- Which rule is being applied?
This keeps the explanation connected to the method being taught.
10. தசை — Dasai
Dasai, commonly written as Dasha, refers to periods used in an astrological timing system.
There are multiple Dasha systems, so “Dasha” alone does not identify every calculation involved.
If a teacher or astrologer mentions a Dasha, ask which system is being used and how its dates were calculated.
A Dasha period is part of an interpretive framework. It should not be treated as a guaranteed timetable for a life event.
11. புத்தி — Bhukti
Bhukti, often written as Buddhi in Tamil astrology discussions, is a subdivision within a Dasha. The term Antardasha is also commonly used for a sub-period.
Think of the distinction as a larger period and a smaller period within it.
When taking notes, write down both names and the dates discussed. Recording only the smaller period can make the explanation difficult to understand later.
In this context, புத்தி is a technical timing term, not its everyday Tamil meaning relating to intellect.
12. கோச்சாரம் — Gocharam
Gocharam means transit: the changing position of a planetary factor considered for a particular date.
A natal chart refers to birth positions. Transit analysis considers positions at another time and relates them to the chosen reference points.
Dasha and Gocharam Are Different
| Term | Main idea |
|---|---|
| Dasha | A calculated period within a timing system |
| Gocharam | Planetary positions at a selected time and their interpreted relationship to a chart |
If both appear in one explanation, ask how they are being combined rather than treating them as interchangeable words.
13. நவாம்சம் — Navamsam
Navamsam, or Navamsa, is a divisional chart commonly called D9.
It is constructed by dividing each zodiac sign into nine equal portions and mapping those portions according to the method’s rules.
You may hear it discussed in relation to marriage or planetary interpretation. However, a Navamsa chart should not be reduced to a simple marriage pass-or-fail result.
Begin with the main chart and its terminology before attempting detailed divisional-chart interpretation.
The ALP Astrology course outline lists divisional charts among its Advanced topics.
14. யோகம் — Yogam
Yogam can refer to a defined combination of chart factors. Its meaning depends on the particular combination and the system being discussed.
In a Panchangam context, Yoga also has a separate calendrical meaning. Ask which usage is intended.
Avoid translating every occurrence of Yogam simply as “good luck.” A named combination usually comes with conditions, and its interpretation may vary.
A useful question is:
“இந்த யோகம் எந்த விதியின் அடிப்படையில் சொல்லப்படுகிறது?”
Which rule is being used to identify this Yoga?
15. தோஷம் — Dosham
Dosham refers to a condition or combination traditionally interpreted as challenging within a particular method.
Hearing the word does not establish that harm will occur. Different practitioners may apply different criteria or interpret the same chart differently.
Ask for the specific configuration, the rule used and the limits of the claim.
Do not let an unexplained label pressure you into an immediate purchase or major personal decision. Astrological terminology is not a substitute for evidence about health, relationships or other important matters.
How These Tamil Astrology Terms Fit Together
Consider this fictional teaching description:
“The Moon is in Taurus, within Rohini Nakshatra. The ascendant is Leo.”
The statement identifies three different things:
| Part of the description | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Taurus | The Moon sign in this example |
| Rohini | The Moon’s Nakshatra |
| Leo | The ascendant sign |
This example does not provide enough information to identify the Nakshatra Padam, calculate a Dasha or interpret the whole horoscope.
Learning to recognise what a statement does—and does not—tell you is an important part of understanding Tamil astrology terms.
Where ALP Fits into the Vocabulary
ALP stands for Akshaya Lagna Paddhati. The provider describes it as a method using a calculated progression of the Lagna with age.
If you study ALP, distinguish the natal ascendant from the progressed position used in the method.
Read the introduction to Akshaya Lagna Paddhati for the organisation’s explanation. Ask a teacher to show which information belongs to the original chart and which belongs to the progression.
A Simple Way to Learn the Terms
Choose three words at a time.
Write each Tamil word, explain it in one sentence and locate an example in your lesson. Then close the book and explain the difference between the terms without reading your notes.
Useful pairs to practise include:
- Rasi and Lagnam.
- Rasi and Bhavam.
- Nakshatram and Padam.
- Dasha and Bhukti.
- Natal position and Gocharam.
The ALP Astrology books catalogue provides Tamil learning-material listings. Check the reading level and sample pages before choosing a book.
If you need structured support, review the available courses and confirm the teaching language and beginner requirements.
Ask for Clear Explanations During a Consultation
You do not need to know every Tamil astrology term before attending an appointment.
You can say:
“இந்தச் சொல்லை எளிய தமிழில் விளக்க முடியுமா?”
Could you explain this term in simple Tamil?
Or:
“இது கணக்கீடா, அல்லது அதன் விளக்கமா?”
Is this the calculation, or the interpretation of it?
For appointment details, see the ALP Astrology consultation page. For books, courses and other offerings, explore the services page or contact the team.
Understanding the vocabulary gives you a better basis for asking questions. You can follow the discussion without treating unfamiliar language as proof that a claim is certain.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the first Tamil astrology terms a beginner should learn?
Start with Jathagam, Rasi, Lagnam, Nakshatram, Padam, Graham and Bhavam. These provide a foundation for reading chart labels and following introductory lessons.
Are Rasi and Lagnam the same?
No. In a typical personal horoscope discussion, Rasi refers to the Moon sign, while Lagnam is the ascendant calculated for the birth time and place.
What is the difference between Nakshatram and Padam?
A Nakshatra is divided into four Padams. The Padam identifies a smaller section within that Nakshatra.
Why are the Sun and Moon called Grahas?
Graha is an astrological category with traditional usage. It does not match the scientific definition of a planet.
Are Dasha and transit the same?
No. Dasha refers to a period within a timing system. Transit refers to planetary positions at a selected time.
Does Dosham mean something bad will definitely happen?
No. It is an interpretive label within astrology, not proof of a future event. Ask for the rule, explanation and uncertainty behind the claim.
Is Navamsam only about marriage?
It is often discussed in that context, but it also has other interpretive uses in Indian astrology. It should not be treated as a simple compatibility score.
Why do English spellings of Tamil astrology terms differ?
Transliteration conventions vary. Words such as Lagnam/Lagna and Nakshatram/Nakshatra may refer to the same concept. Check the definition and context.
